MUSICDAYS VIANDEN 2025 – Der Ruf des Horns
MusicDays Vianden 2025
02.11. – 09.11.2025
Castle, Ancien Cinéma, Trinitarian Church
6th edition
For the sixth time, the MusicDays are transforming the town of Vianden into a stage for musical discoveries. The festival opens with the Calmus Ensemble Leipzig and Maurice Clement (organ) at the Église des Trinitaires, presenting a program that spans the Renaissance, Romantic era, and contemporary vocal music. At the castle, the concert “The Call of the Horn” features works by Mozart, Brahms, Reuter, and Kurtág, in which the horn serves as a sonic thread through the ages. The Anaphora Trio brings a jazz evening to the Ancien Cinéma, blending techno-inspired rhythms, improvisation, and non-European influences. For children and families, “Coppélia – Eng ongewéinlech Popp” offers a musical and dance-based storytelling experience. The closing concert features the intimate beauty of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet alongside Strauss’s pointed and witty suite “Le Bourgeois gentilhomme” – a final meeting of sonic finesse and stylistic sophistication. Old and new, poetic and playful come into dialogue – there’s something here for every taste.

Forest Calm and Hunting Fanfares
Few instruments are as closely connected to nature as the horn – its sound ranges from a gentle call to a festive fanfare. In this concert, Luxembourg horn player Leo Halsdorf, together with musicians from Kammerata Luxembourg, showcases the versatility of this instrument through works by Mozart, Kurtág, Reuter, and Brahms.
Mozart’s Horn Quintet, written in 1782 for the virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb, opens the evening with a warm, dark tone that unites brilliance and chamber music intimacy. In Kurtág’s Signs, Games and Messages, this sound world is reflected fragmentarily – short musical miniatures that oscillate between suggestion and silence. Marcel Reuter’s Infra la neve continues this thread, painting a fragile winter landscape with subtle color nuances.
The program concludes with Brahms’ Horn Trio in E-flat major, which combines the natural sound of the horn with romantic depth, unfolding a wide emotional range between wistful intimacy and radiant energy.
Thus, the evening unites forest calm and passion, intimacy and festive brilliance – carried by the unmistakable sound of the horn.
